Labrador Retrievers Explained – A Beginner’s Guide (Love Your Dog Series Book 4)

In the United States, the American Kennel Club reports that Labrador retrievers, commonly called “labs”, have been the most popular breed for many years. In fact, labs have been the most popular dog breed in the U.S., U.K., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia since 1991.

Golden retrievers are a similar size and type of dog as labs, but labs are not the same as golden retrievers.

While this breed is still favored by all sorts of sportsman, they are also favored by plenty of families who live in the city or a suburb and don’t venture out in the country for sports. They are known as intelligent, playful, and very peaceful dogs.

Many vets suggest labs as pets to have around children because they seldom get aggressive. In fact, they demonstrate quite a bit of empathy and concern over the feelings of other people and dogs in their home. It is very likely that a Labrador retriever will become the best friend of everybody in the household. That is especially true if positive behaviors are reinforced correctly and consistently.

Throughout this book, you will learn about the history of the breed and the origin of the different lab types, their appearance and physical constitution.

You will also find very insightful tips on how to raise labradors and what / how to feed them, starting from the puppy stage, until they’re elderly and may require some special care.

Labs enjoy attention and are eager to hear praise. However, sometimes they get the idea that they are in charge or, at least, living in an anarchy. Following the training tips outlined in this guide, you will be sure that you are always perceived as the one in control.

And we will also help you decide if a labrador retriever should become a member of the family. These dogs have a lot of energy, and puppies love to chew; also, labs get big and strong, and they grow fast. By the time that an adult lab weighs 50 to 75 pounds, he or she will not be easy to just pick up and move, so training has to begin as soon as possible. Some people may be happier with a smaller dog, so it’s something you have to know in advance.

Nevertheless, labs are intelligent (they are usually so smart that they begin to anticipate their owners), beautiful, and playful dogs that will remain loyal and learn quickly, and also so eager to please that they are willing to do almost anything for their owner. That’s probably why this type of dog is the most popular breed in many countries and has been for decades.

With a bit of planning and work, labs offer a lot more than they ask for. Training may seem difficult at first, but it gets progressively easier. Owners who reward signs of progress and act in a consistent manner are usually very pleased with the results after a few weeks have passed.

When people say that dogs are man’s best friend, they must have been thinking about labs. Enjoy this fantastic guide to a wonderful dog!
